How to Become a Columbia Master of Architecture

The Master of Architecture program offers students the opportunity to learn more about architectural theory and practice. The Master of Architecture program is designed for the student who has completed a Bachelor’s degree and wishes to explore further in a field of study that is important to the future of architecture. In M.Arch. at Columbia, we have a lot of freedom in what we can create. Our design studio has four or five faculty members, many of whom have worked together for years. An advisory committee, made up of some of our professors and the Department of Architecture and Planning, supports us.

What is a Master of Architecture?

A master’s degree is a terminal academic degree that typically requires an applicant to submit a thesis based on original research. It is often awarded after a candidate has completed a bachelor’s degree.

A university awards a master’s degree after an individual completes coursework and a thesis or dissertation. Typically, a graduate school will require its students to complete an application and submit a portfolio.

Master’s degrees are awarded in fields such as accounting, business, computer science, education, engineering, finance, information systems, law, liberal arts, medical sciences, nursing, psychology, public administration, public health, and religious studies.

The Master of Architecture is designed to educate the student to become an architect capable of handling projects from concept to completion.

The program consists of a minimum of 32 units, divided into four major areas:

The process of becoming a certified architect

As a certified architect, you will work to meet the profession’s requirements, including the ethical codes.

To qualify for the designation of Certified Architect, you must demonstrate that you have completed a series of examinations, taken a course in ethics, passed the Architect Registration Examination, and met other qualifications.

To become certified, you must pass all of the required exams with a score of at least 70 percent. You may then apply for registration with the ARB.
